Objective – Students will compare their average school day to the day of a child living in a Residential School.

- Fold a piece of lined paper in half lengthwise. (Hotdog fold)
- After writing an example of the your/teacher’s life on the board (with time and event), have students write the events of their average school day on one side of the paper.
- Have students compare their average day.
- Allow students to choose either the boy’s day or girl’s day at a residential school.

- Have the students cut and glue the residential school schedule beside their schedule.
- Encourage a conversation about what they notice is different between the two days.
- Show the book “When I was Eight“
- Stop the video to discuss:
- that the book she is referring to is Alice in Wonderland
- the lack of educational time until winter
- the amount of chores she is doing
- that she ate cabbage soup for dinner
- Indigenous people can now reclaim traditional names on their passports and other ID
- To end on a positive note, show the video with the girl learning Halq’emeylem.
